This Week in Austin

This Week in Austin

These are our picks for all that's funny in Austin. This week, capital-V-Value steals a pick away from big-name notoriety.

Pick of the Week

FunFunFunFest
Waterloo Park
Saturday & Sunday
$75 - 150

Posehn, Barry, Buress, Walsh, , Thune, Peretti, Metallager, Altercation . . .

Look. We're not going to hold your hand. Somethings you've just got to do on your own. Yes, outdoor comedy is scary. Yes, unwashed indie-punks having a movie debate in front of you is excrutiating. But if you're a comedy fanatic, this is where you'll be this weekend. If you're more of a passive comedy spectator, check out our "chairs provided, climate controlled" shows in the Best of the Rest. (Speaking of . . . Jesus Exmass, Transmission! When are you all finally going to rent a tent so the comedy stage "works"? When? DO IT!)

Best of the Rest

Brendon Walsh CD recording
Coldtowne Theater
Friday, 10PM and Midnight
$5

Brendon Walsh used to live in Austin. He drank here, he slept here, he screwed here. But he left it all behind for LA riches. Stupid move, right? Everyone moves to LA and then fails. Except he didn't. Barely a month into his move, Walsh sold a pilot to Spike TV. Add that to his multiple TV creds (Comedy Central, "Jimmy Kimmel"), his festival appearances (Montreal, Bentzen Ball), and the fact that he's here to record a CD for the newly minted Rooftop Comedy label, and you have a fairly impressive resume. Why am I dropping this on you? Because it proves that everyone likes him. And marketing 101 shows that you're more likely to go see something everyone tells you is good than to just make up your own mind. Bleet away, sheep.

Eric Krug
The Velveeta Room
Friday & Saturday, 9:30 & 11:30
$5

It's been a decent 18 months for former Airman Eric Krug. He handily won the 2008 Funniest Person in Austin contest. Lest you think he's too-full of local references and amateurism, Krug got nabbed up by the prestigious Just for Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival this past summer. You know how getting a SXSW showcase is a big deal? Well South-By gives out hundreds of them. Montreal gives out 24. Run the numbers. Last, but not least, the guy just got back from New York where he taped his television debut for Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham". If you like dark, smart, well-written or any combination of the above . . . go. Buy a cheap-ass Velveeta Room ticket and go.

Rest of the Rest

"By the power of Grey Skull...I HAVE THE POWER!"

Stand-up/improviser/sketch comedian/producer, Dario Konjicija, is bringing the ultimate in animated-sexy to the stage with a LIVE revue of the 80’s childhood classic, “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe!” In a very limited run at The City Theater, Konjicija teams up with a hilarious cast of actors (including sketch-conspirator Bobby DiPasquale) and musicians to resurrect two original episodes from the Saturday morning series, but with special on-stage twists!

For anyone that’s ever had a childhood, we know you’ll be there. For anyone that’s NEVER had a childhood, now’s your time to get one.

Joe Rogan
CapCity Comedy Club
Thursday - Saturday
Tickets vary

On any other week, Joe Rogan earns a Pick of the Week. But it's a packed week. And Joe's hardly wanting for publicity, right?

Ruby Collins w/ Chance Royce and Chad Warren
Friday, November 6th and 7th - 10 pm @ Corridor Comedy
Tickets: $8.00

There’s no rest for the wicked as Ruby Collins returns to Texas, straight from the Altercation Comedy Tour and onto the stage as this week’s headliner in San Marcos’s Corridor Comedy! If you haven’t had a chance to see Ms. Collins yet, now would be the time to do so – you might be able to catch some fresh on-the-road tales of mischief and glory from the Femme-bot herself.

Also performing this week are Chance Royce (Austin’s original Biscuit) and Chad Warren (Comedy historian extraordinaire).
